THE ALAR PARK AVENUE

Shortlisted Competition Project | New York, NY | Marin Architects

The Alar is a transformation of the Park Avenue median space spanning from 46th to 57th streets, creating a captivating experience that unfolds from start to finish. It serves as a symbolic backbone, guiding pedestrians as they reconnect with the multifaceted elements that constitute the essence of New York City. Inspired by the resilient Mimosa Pudica plant, the “leaves” adorning the Alar’s towers establish a connection between the subterranean world and the urban landscape above.

These innovative structures respond dynamically to the pulsating rhythm of the trains passing beneath, a vital part of Park Avenue’s historical tapestry. Similar to the Mimosa Pudica’s sensitive foliage, The Alar is equipped with sensors within the train tunnels that register the vibrations and movement of each passing train. This sensory feedback animates The Alar, causing its distinctive “leaves” to mimic the plant’s natural response by opening and closing. In this way, The Alar not only celebrates the city’s rich history but also breathes life into the urban environment, bridging the gap between the past and the present.
